The Malawian Delegates Visit Chief Justice
A team from the Malawian Judiciary, on October 18, 2017 paid a courtesy call on the Chief Justice, Hon. Justice Bart M Katureebe, in his chambers at the Kampala High Court.
The Chief Justice led the team on a guided tour. The Chief of party Justice Eseme Chombo, was impressed by the Ugandan court system pointing out that Malawi does not have a Court of Appeal
"Interms of numbers, the Malawian Judiciary has nine Supreme Court judges, 26 High Court judges and there is no Court of Appeal," Hon. Justice Chombo said.
The Hon. Chief Justice told the team which is on bench-marking visits how the courts have developed a Performance Enhancement Tool to evaluate the performance of judicial officers. "We have also set targets for judicial officers at their different levels as one of the mechanisms to fight case backlog, the Chief Justice said.
He further talked about the five-year ICT strategy that will see most of the court processes automated.
The Chief Justice also highlighted the innovations put in place to fight case backlog.
"As part of the efforts to fight case backlog, a Case Backlog Monitoring Committee was established." The Committee is following up on the implementation of the Case Backlog Reduction Committee.
During their four-day visit, the Malawian team has paid courtesy calls to different divisions of the High Court and key judicial administrative offices.
